Left Elbow Soreness Sidelines Cliff Lee

Just before Sunday’s Grapefruit League game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro announced that former Cy Young award winner Cliff Lee has been experiencing discomfort in his left elbow. This is the same elbow that bothered him last year before his season ended early thanks to a strained flexor tendon.

Amaro said the team does not “have any idea where we’re going to go from there,” and that he is hopeful that  “he’ll [Lee] be able to make his following start.”

Lee was said to have been fine during the Phillies’ game against Houston on Thursday and that the discomfort didn’t start until his workout the following day. Amaro said the pain was “very mild,” and that because of what happened last year the team wanted to be “hypersensitive.”

Lee received an MRI after being examined by the team physician and the results have yet to come back, as they were forwarded to Dr. James Andrews. But, Amaro says that the tests were precautionary and that they showed no damage to the UCL.

This news comes just hours after Rangers’ Ace Yu Darvish was diagnosed with a UCL sprain after pitching just one inning on Thursday. The Rangers fear they might be without Darvish for the 2015 season due to potential Tommy John surgery, but the Phillies do not seem to be as concerned about the Cliff Lee situation.
