Pirates Spring Training Report: March 7

MLB: Spring Training-Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates hosted the Rays at McKechnie Field in what would turn out to be an uneventful Saturday of Spring Training baseball. The game was called a tie after 10 innings of play. Here’s a few things that we can take away from Saturday’s action:

  • A.J. Burnett was the on the mound to start the game for the Buccos. He looked solid only giving up 1 hit in 2 innings of work. The Pirates are going to look for A.J. to provide some veteran leadership this season.
  • Despite having 10 hits, the Pirates went a combined 0-10 with runners in scoring position. That’s 0-18 with runners in scoring position in their last two games.
  • Second Basemen Steve Lombardozzi was the only Pirate to have a multiple hit game. He went 2-2 and scored the only run of the game for Pittsburgh when the Rays third basemen made an error on a pick off attempt.

Other notables: Gregory Polanco (1-2), Starling Marte (1-2), Taylor Lewis (1-2), Brent Morel (1-1)

The Pirates will play the Blue Jays Sunday at 1:07 ET. Casey Sadler is set to get the start for the Buccos, and Aaron Sanchez will be on the hill for Toronto.

Let’s Go Bucs!
