Favors, Jazz hold off Knicks

Salt Lake City-The Utah Jazz were playing their first game at home after a 4 game road trip.

The Knicks were on a long west coast road trip, and coming off a 106-78 loss on Monday night at Denver.

They always say the first game after a long road trip is the toughest. The Utah Jazz found that out first hand. They did just enough and made just enough plays to hold off the Knicks 87-82 Tuesday night.

Jazz star forward Gordan Hayward missed the game with back spasms, but Derrick Favors and rookie Rodney Hood stepped up to preserve the victory. Favors had 20 points in the first half and finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Hood had 13 of his 18 points in the third quarter to keep the Jazz close.

New York, after being down 43-35, came out strong in the third quarter, and took the lead 54-51. But thanks to Hood, the Jazz stayed right with the Knicks. The game was tied at 65 going into the fourth quarter.

After New York tied the game at 73, another Jazz rookie, 27 year old Joe Ingles made 5 straight points to give the Jazz a 78-73 lead they would not relinquish.

Besides Favors 29 and Hood’s 18, Ingles pitched in 12, and Rudy Gobert had 10 points, 14 boards, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. The Jazz shot just 42% but shot 12 more free throws making six more than New York.(21-29)

New York was led by Alexy Shved who had 21 points, Andrea Bargnani with 20, and Cole Aldrich came off the bench to add 13 points and 10 boards. New York shot just 39% and made 15-17 free throws.

Give New York credit. They came out fighting after getting blown out the night before.

Utah hosts Houston on Thursday night.

New York is at the LA Lakers on Thursday night.
