Ranking the NBA’s ‘Big Threes’

on

In recent years, the NBA has come to be dominated by the notion that to win a championship, a team must have a ‘Big Three’ – three superstar players leading a team. This was perhaps best seen recently with the Miami Heat, who won two championships with a Big Three consisting of their franchise star, Dwyane Wade, power forward Chris Bosh, and the King himself, LeBron James. Looking across the league, several teams have started to build up their own Big Three – the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, and more have all tried with different degrees of success.

However, which team in the league has the best Big Three? After looking around the league, analyzing each and every team, these rankings were the result of that search. Please feel free to comment below, or contact me @SportsMeccaORL with your opinions – now, which team has the best Big Three in the league?

30. Philadelphia 76ers

Nerlens Noel | Robert Covington | Luc Mbah a Moute

The Philadelphia 76ers are still only partway through their ‘tankathon’, and thus have yet been unable to really create a Big Three, although there are several young pieces who could develop into that calibre of player. One such player, last year’s rookie of the year, Michael Carter-Williams, was recently traded to the Milwaukee Bucks – however, they still have the likes of Nerlens Noel, and Joel Embiid, who could well be key parts for a future contending team.

29. Boston Celtics

Isaiah Thomas | Jared Sullinger | Marcus Smart

The Boston Celtics have only recently begun their rebuild in-full, but have already acquired some nice pieces to form a future Big Three. Isaiah Thomas is a good offensive player who is best utilized as a sixth man scorer off the bench, whilst Jared Sullinger is a double-double threat. Rookie Marcus Smart has started to show that he can run an offense – if he can get a more reliable jump shot, he has the opportunity to be a star in the NBA. The future is bright for Boston’s Big Three, but there is still a very long way to go.

28. New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony | Jose Calderon | Tim Hardaway Jr.

The New York Knicks’ current situation is reflected by looking at the respective statuses of their Big Three. Carmelo Anthony has shut-down for the season following the All-Star game. The Knicks have actively been trying to trade away aging point guard Jose Calderon, but to no avail. At this stage of his career, sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr. is an inefficient volume scorer, and not a player who should be part of any team’s Big Three. The Knicks have a very long road ahead of them to return to relevance – and it’s fair to say that this Big Three will have to be substantially upgraded to get there.
