Effects of the Fraternity Scandal at OU

Last week, a fraternity on the campus of Oklahoma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, has the center of a national controversy when video revealed racist remarks made in a chant by members of the fraternity. In the video, that was posted to numerous social media sites, the members of the fraternity were quoted on saying the n word multiple times. Here is the transcript of the actual video:

“There will never be a n***** in SAE.
There will never be a n***** in SAE.
You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me
There will never be a n***** in SAE.”

The Oklahoma president, David Boren, has had to put out the fire that these very immature students have started. In a statement to the Huffington Post, Boren went on record to say,  “If OU students are involved, this behavior will not be tolerated and will be addressed very quickly. If the reports are true the chapter will no longer remain on campus. This behavior is reprehensible and contrary to all of our values.” As most people are really only noticing the social effects, as it should, the university’s athletic programs are starting to feel the pressure caused by these stupid kids.

High school junior Jean Delance, a 4-star offensive tackle from North Mesquite High School in Texas, decommitted form the Sooners due to what Delance called “personal reasons” in a tweet that he sent out on March 9th. The move to decommit had nothing to do with the staff or the program, but more to do with the scandal and controversy surrounding the school. Bob Przybylo, a writer for Scout.com, talked with the recruit and later reported that the cloud surrounding the school really disturbed the tackle from Texas. Delance was ranked, 247Sports, as the 162nd-ranked prospect and the 16th best offensive tackle in the country. This is a huge loss for a Sooners team that was looking to bounce back from a rough 2014-2015 season. This could be just the start for a trend of players decommitting due to this horrific video.

This kind of behavior isn’t tolerated anywhere in the country, and if potential players see this type of activities happening at Norman, then I guarantee that Delance will not be alone in decommitting from the school. This is a very unique situation because Bob Stoops, the rest of the Oklahoma staff, and the other programs at Oklahoma cannot control the actions of a certain population of the students who participated in this heinous activity. This action is hurting recruiting all over the school, and the coaches will have to do huge amounts of damage control to stop potential students from taking the course that Delance did. Sports are not important in this situation, with the social aspects carrying much more weight than the athletic ones, but Delance could possibly start a trend at Norman that other potential athletes begin to follow. With this sort of behavior being on the forefront of the United Sates issues, this could have major impacts on not only Oklahoma, but other schools that find themselves in similar situations. Things like this should never happen, let alone be posted on a social media site. This behavior should never be tolerated, and the school is just beginning to feel the effects of the incident, both in the classroom and on the athletic fields.
