NHL Deal with ESPN Sign of Things to Come?

AKRON,OH- The NHL announced, today, that the bidding war for their World Cup of Hockey has ended.  ESPN, surprisingly, won the bidding contest over NBC and Fox to televise the tournament in summer 2016.  The NHL and NBC have a 10 year Regular Season and Playoff TV rights agreement that runs through the 2020-21 season.

To add to the fire, Rick Westhead, of TSN, reported that NBC executives are upset because they believed the NHL used them to be able to use NBC suites, for the Super Bowl, this past Sunday.  NBC believes that the NHL held out on announcing who would be televising the World Cup of Hockey, while already knowing who won the bidding war, last week.

It’ll be interesting to see how or if this, ultimately, damages the relationship between the NHL and NBC who have been strong partners, in the United States, since the 2004-05 lockout.

We’ll keep you posted on the details, as they become available, in the coming days and weeks.
